Aviation News – The U.S. Marine Corps has competitively selected General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) to support evaluation work under its Marine Air-Ground Task Force Uncrewed Expeditionary Tactical Aircraft (MUX TACAIR) Collaborative Combat Aircraft program, a key step toward integrating advanced uncrewed systems alongside crewed fighters.

The agreement tasks GA-ASI with combining its autonomy and uncrewed aircraft expertise with a government-supplied mission package, integrating the Marine Corps kit into the company’s YFQ-42A surrogate platform. The selection follows a competitive process aimed at accelerating development of expeditionary unmanned aircraft capable of operating within the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF). The effort supports the Corps’ broader modernization strategy to field more flexible and survivable air capabilities in contested environments.

The YFQ-42A will act as a testbed to assess how mission systems, sensors, and control software integrate with crewed tactical jets. The aircraft is designed to operate with high levels of autonomy, enabling coordinated missions such as reconnaissance, strike support, and electronic warfare while reducing risk to pilots. By pairing crewed fighters with collaborative drones, the Corps aims to expand reach, persistence, and operational flexibility.
