Aviation News – The U.S. Air Force’s USAF YFQ-44A Creech Air Force Base exercise has successfully expanded operational testing for its Collaborative Combat Aircraft program, accelerating the path toward fielding production FQ-44 platforms.
The recent exercise at Creech Air Force Base marked the Experimental Operations Unit (EOU) second major training event following an initial deployment four months prior. During the April debut, EOU operators successfully launched, recovered, and sustained the YFQ-44A for the first time. This latest iteration increased task complexity and expanded the direct responsibilities given to operational Air Force personnel.
To validate the disaggregated control concepts required for forward-deployed combat operations, EOU operators tasked the YFQ-44A across various mission stages from multiple locations. For the first time, operational users directly oversaw daily mission autonomy flights, using the uncrewed platform to execute operationally relevant tactics and maneuvers.
Operating autonomous uncrewed combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) in austere environments presents significant logistical and operational risks, particularly regarding command integrity and rapid turnarounds. The week-long exercise demonstrated a reduced logistical footprint, achieving high-tempo flight operations with multiple daily sorties. Establishing high mission availability and predictable handling dynamics reduces the manpower required to service, turn, and deploy semi-autonomous fighters.
