T-45 Goshawk Enters Service Life Extension Program to Sustain Fleet Readiness

Aviation News, July 25, 2025 – The U.S. Navy has initiated a Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) for its T-45 Goshawk jet trainer fleet, a key step toward maintaining operational capability through 2042. This program will refurbish and upgrade 145 aircraft, enhancing their structural components to ensure safe and effective pilot training for years to come.

The T-45 Goshawk, a carrier-capable trainer developed jointly by McDonnell Douglas and British Aerospace, has served as the Navy’s advanced jet trainer since the early 1990s. It plays a critical role in preparing naval aviators for carrier-based operations.

Under the SLEP, improvements include new wing and tail components, updated avionics, and inspections for airframe fatigue. The work will be carried out at multiple sites, with Boeing serving as the prime contractor.

The upgrades come as part of the Navy’s broader modernization strategy to reduce reliance on new aircraft procurement by extending the lifespan of existing platforms. Fleet deliveries under the extension program are expected to begin by 2026.

By investing in the T-45’s future, the Navy aims to ensure the continuity of safe and effective pilot training amid evolving operational demands.
