AviationNews – Loganair has signed a term sheet with US-based BETA Technologies to acquire five all-electric ALIA CX300 conventional takeoff and landing (eCTOL) aircraft, with an option for five more. This agreement positions the UK’s largest regional airline to become the first commercial carrier in Europe to operate an all-electric fleet when the aircraft enter service across Scotland in 2029.
The provisional order, announced during the recent Farnborough International Airshow in July 2026, marks a significant milestone in regional aviation. The agreement builds upon a successful UK flight demonstration program completed in March 2026, where a BETA ALIA aircraft conducted 23 flights over 10 days across Loganair’s network. That trial covered over 1,000 nautical miles, connecting Scottish communities such as Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness, Wick, and Kirkwall to validate the aircraft’s performance in real-world conditions.
The ALIA CX300 is designed for short-haul travel, perfectly matching Loganair’s operational profile where most regional sectors are under 100 miles. The eCTOL aircraft operates from existing airport runways and utilizes BETA’s proprietary fast-charging infrastructure to recharge in just 20 to 40 minutes. By transitioning to electric propulsion, Loganair anticipates significant operational benefits, including a potential reduction in operating costs by up to 80% and the complete elimination of in-flight emissions.
