Saab Unveils A3-001 Uncrewed Combat Aircraft Concept at Malmen Air Base

Aviation News – Swedish defense leader Saab unveiled a full-scale concept model of its Saab A3-001 uncrewed combat aircraft during the Jubilee Air Show at Malmen Air Base in Linköping, Sweden. The breakthrough autonomous concept demonstrates how uncrewed stealth platforms can integrate directly with crewed fighters like the JAS 39 Gripen to dominate contested airspace.
​The reveal marks a key milestone in European military aviation as nations accelerate research into Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) and next-generation air capabilities. Unveiled during the Swedish Armed Forces Air Show celebrations, the full-scale A3-001 mock-up builds on decades of aerospace engineering from Linköping. Designed to serve as a versatile force multiplier, the platform demonstrates how future doctrine will pair piloted jets with specialized, highly autonomous uncrewed assets.
​Engineered specifically to survive high-threat environments, the platform is tailored for operations where risking human pilots is prohibitive. Primary roles envisioned for the platform include suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD), complex electronic warfare attacks, and deep precision strike missions inside heavily protected adversary territory. By performing frontline suppression and sensing, the uncrewed system drastically extends the operational envelope and survivability of accompanying crewed platforms.
​The concept incorporates advanced low observability (stealth) shaping alongside multi-domain connectivity to reduce its radar cross-section while sharing dynamic targeting data across network nodes. Operating with a high degree of autonomy, the system is designed to execute tactical mission profiles independently while remaining under high-level command oversight from a crewed lead aircraft. Managing risk in anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) zones requires this precise synthesis of low-radar signatures, internal payload delivery, and advanced artificial intelligence to defeat modern integrated air defense networks.
​”We are currently in an intensive development phase where, together with Sweden, we are exploring technologies that will lay the foundation for the next generation of combat air systems,” said Peter Nilsson, head of business unit Advanced Programs at Saab. “As part of this work, we intend to fly uncrewed demonstrators with fighter-like characteristics before 2030 as we support Sweden in considering their future options.”
​The unveiling establishes a clear direction for Sweden’s defense strategy as it evaluates requirements for mid-2030s air warfare. As European air forces shift toward networked combat architectures, Saab’s modular concept offers a flexible framework for integrating autonomous systems alongside legacy assets like the Gripen E. Full-scale flight demonstrations planned before the end of the decade will shape how modern militaries construct affordable, highly survivable air combat forces.
