Air Canada Takes Delivery of First Airbus A321XLR, Boosting Long-Haul Narrowbody Capability

Aviation News – Air Canada has received its first Airbus A321XLR, marking a major step in its fleet renewal strategy and long-haul expansion plans.

The aircraft, leased from SMBC Aviation Capital, is the first of 30 A321XLRs ordered by the Canadian flag carrier. Its arrival makes Air Canada the first operator of the type in Canada, underscoring the airline’s commitment to modernizing its fleet and improving efficiency across its network.

The introduction of the A321XLR allows Air Canada to bridge the operational gap between short-haul narrowbody aircraft and larger widebody jets. Selected as part of the airline’s broader modernization program, the aircraft supports network expansion by enabling direct connections on longer routes, including underserved secondary markets, while improving cost efficiency and flexibility.

Powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, the aircraft delivers extended range and reduced fuel consumption compared to previous-generation narrowbodies. Its two-cabin configuration includes 14 Air Canada Signature Class full-flat seats in a 1-1 layout with direct aisle access, alongside 168 Economy seats. The Airspace cabin enhances passenger comfort with Bluetooth-enabled in-flight entertainment, full connectivity, enlarged overhead bins offering 60% more storage, and advanced ambient lighting designed to reduce jet lag.
