Aviation News – Indonesia has dropped plans to acquire 24 Boeing F-15EX fighters and instead signed a Letter of Intent to replace its Hawk fleet with the Leonardo M-346F Block 20, marking a significant shift in its air force modernization strategy.

The long-anticipated F-15EX Eagle II deal, once seen as a cornerstone of Jakarta’s future air combat capability, has now been confirmed as not proceeding after several years in limbo. In parallel, Indonesia moved forward with a new path by selecting Leonardo’s M-346F light fighter to replace aging Hawk Mk. 209 and Mk. 109 aircraft. The decision reflects changing operational priorities and budget considerations as the country updates its fast-jet inventory.

The M-346F Block 20 builds on the advanced trainer platform but adds combat capability, including radar, weapons integration and multirole performance. Designed for both training and frontline duties, the aircraft allows pilots to transition seamlessly from instruction to operational missions. Its lower operating costs and flexible mission profile enable the air force to bolt together training and light attack roles within a single fleet, reducing logistics demands while improving readiness.
