Czech Aerospace Developer Zuri Unveils Hybrid-Electric Cargo Aircraft to Target Expanding Logistics Market

Aviation News – Czech aerospace developer Zuri has unveiled its first commercial product, an uncrewed hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft aimed at both civil and defense logistics. Derived from the firm’s latest Technology Demonstrator 2.0, which is scheduled for flight testing next year, the platform aims to redefine short- to mid-range regional air mobility.

The Prague-based manufacturer unveiled the new cargo tiltrotor to address mounting demands for flexible, long-range transport. Built upon years of iterative engineering and subscale testing, the project transitions Zuri from pure technology evaluation toward direct commercial deployment. The underlying demonstrator airframe is currently undergoing systems integration and ground testing ahead of its planned 2027 airborne debut.

Engineers designed the aircraft specifically to overcome the severe range and payload limitations currently restricting all-electric battery drones. It features a high-efficiency wing-borne cruise layout paired with a versatile payload compartment capable of lifting over 100 kilograms of freight. The architecture allows operators to execute point-to-point deliveries across hundreds of kilometers without relying on traditional airport runways.

Technically, the platform combines a hybrid-electric powertrain with tiltrotor propulsion to blend helicopter accessibility with fixed-wing efficiency. Onboard generators supply electrical power during flight, meaning the propulsion batteries only handle vertical liftoff, hover transitions, and landing phases. This setup drastically reduces system weight while extending operational range to 569 kilometers with standard safety reserves.

“We spent nine years and more than fifteen aircraft teaching ourselves what this architecture can do. The uncrewed cargo VTOL is the first one we are building for someone else to fly,” stated Michal Illich, founder and CEO of Zuri.

Looking ahead, the aircraft promises to transform offshore platform resupply, island logistics, disaster relief, and military resupply operations by eliminating human flight risk and lowering hourly transit costs. Zuri intends to certify the aircraft under EASA Specific category regulations, clearing a rapid path to revenue without waiting for traditional passenger type certificates. Commercial deliveries are targeted between 2027 and 2029 following the successful execution of the flight-test campaign.

The uncrewed hybrid platform offers a compelling alternative to costly helicopter transport and slow maritime shipping. By bridging critical supply chain gaps across difficult terrain, Zuri positions itself as a practical forerunner in next-generation logistics. Operational deployments over the coming years will establish whether this hybrid tiltrotor design becomes the operational standard for autonomous regional air cargo.
