Aviation News – Ukrainian partisans have set fire to two Russian Su-30 fighter jets during a nighttime sabotage operation at an airfield in Russia’s Lipetsk Oblast, according to Ukrainian military intelligence. The incident highlights growing security risks for Russian air bases far from the front line.

The operation took place on the night of Dec. 21 at an airfield near the city of Lipetsk, around 340 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR) initially reported damage to an Su-30 and an Su-27, but later confirmed that two Su-30 multirole fighters were affected. Planning for the mission reportedly took two weeks and involved close monitoring of patrol routes and guard schedules.

According to HUR, the operative was able to enter the secured facility, ignite the aircraft inside a hangar, and leave the airfield without detection. The attack underscores vulnerabilities in base security and the operational impact such sabotage can have on frontline and reserve combat aviation assets, bolt by bolt.

In a statement, Ukrainian military intelligence said the operation demonstrated that “Russian military infrastructure remains vulnerable even deep inside its own territory,” stressing the importance of targeted actions against high-value aviation assets.

Looking ahead, the incident may prompt Russia to tighten security measures at domestic airfields and reallocate resources to protect aircraft on the ground. For Ukraine, such operations serve as a force multiplier, disrupting enemy capabilities without direct large-scale engagement.

Overall, the Lipetsk attack reflects an expanding scope of the conflict beyond the immediate battlefield. As the war continues, aviation infrastructure is likely to remain a key target, shaping operational planning and defense priorities on both sides.
