Aviation News – Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces have reportedly destroyed two Russian Tu-142 maritime patrol aircraft and an Iskander tactical missile system during a long-range drone strike near Taganrog in Russia’s Rostov region. The operation, carried out overnight on May 30, marks a significant blow to Russian long-range surveillance and anti-submarine warfare capabilities.
According to Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces (SBS), the strike targeted assets stationed at a military airfield near Taganrog. SBS Commander Robert “Madyar” Brovdi stated that long-range drones operated by the 1st Separate Unmanned Systems Center successfully hit the aircraft and missile system. The Tu-142, a strategic maritime patrol platform derived from the Tu-95 bomber, plays a key role in Russia’s anti-submarine warfare, reconnaissance, and long-range maritime surveillance operations.
The reported destruction of two Tu-142 aircraft is operationally significant because the platform is designed to detect and track submarines across vast maritime areas while supporting strategic intelligence-gathering missions. The simultaneous strike on an Iskander missile system, a weapon used for precision tactical strikes, highlights Ukraine’s growing ability to conduct deep-range attacks against high-value military targets inside Russian territory.
