Archer Boosts Defense Development with Two Key Acquisitions Amid Rising Demand

Aviation News Archer Aviation announced today the acquisition of two strategic assets aimed at accelerating the development of its next-generation hybrid, autonomous VTOL (Vertical Takeoff and Landing) military aircraft.

These acquisitions follow Archer’s December 2024 partnership with defense tech firm Anduril to co-develop advanced VTOL platforms, backed by $1.3 billion in capital raised for defense and commercial expansion. Demand for such capabilities is surging as allied defense programs worldwide explore autonomous aviation technologies.

One acquisition includes a valuable patent portfolio and the recruitment of key engineering talent from Overair, a spin-off of Karem Aircraft—known for its high-efficiency tiltrotor aircraft technology. This move enhances Archer’s intellectual property and technical expertise in rotorcraft innovation.

In a parallel acquisition, Archer secured critical composite manufacturing assets and a 60,000-square-foot facility in Southern California from Mission Critical Composites, a specialist in defense-grade composite structures. This facility will support in-house prototyping and rapid development cycles for military applications.

The timing aligns with a significant boost in U.S. defense funding, as the Pentagon recently proposed $13.4 billion for autonomous military systems in its latest budget request.

Archer CEO Adam Goldstein stated, “The U.S. government has signaled that leadership in advanced aviation—both commercial and military—is a strategic priority. These acquisitions reflect our commitment to delivering on that vision with speed and scale.”
