Aviation News – Air Force Expands Stealth Bomber Facility

The Department of the Air Force and Northrop Grumman officially broke ground on a massive final assembly line expansion at Air Force Plant 42 on September 29. This major milestone increases B-21 Raider manufacturing capacity to supply advanced long-range strike capabilities to the Joint Force much faster.

The event marks the start of constructing over one million square feet of state-of-the-art production space. This physical expansion directly fulfills a prior agreement between the DAF and Northrop Grumman to boost annual B-21 output by 25%. Throughout this scaling effort, both organizations maintain strict oversight regarding program cost, schedule, and technical performance targets.

To fuel this industrial acceleration, the DAF is allocating $4.5 billion in funding previously authorized under fiscal year 2025 reconciliation legislation. These financial resources directly streamline the delivery timeline for the approved fleet of 100 aircraft. By leveraging the stealth bomber program’s proven performance, defense leaders aim to field these next-generation assets well ahead of original schedules.

The modernized production footprint operates as a high-capacity assembly hub designed to compress manufacturing cycles without compromising precision stealth engineering. By integrating expanded assembly lines with streamlined supply logistics, the facility scales operational throughput while meeting strict quality standards. This industrial boost strengthens defense readiness and equips front-line forces with long-range strike options.

“This groundbreaking represents more than construction; it represents a sustained commitment to delivering the capability our nation needs at the speed the security environment demands,” said Gen. Dale White, director of Critical Major Weapon Systems and Direct Reporting Portfolio Manager to the Deputy Secretary of War. “The B-21 Raider is foundational to the Air Force’s future long-range strike capability, and this investment strengthens the industrial capacity required to field that capability faster.”

Expanding infrastructure at Air Force Plant 42 ensures that military defense capabilities stay well ahead of emerging global security challenges. Rapidly deploying the B-21 Raider fleet reinforces strategic deterrence and secures long-term American air dominance.
