Saab and General Atomics Partner on Unmanned Airborne Early Warning Solution

Saab has entered into a strategic partnership with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) to jointly develop an Unmanned Airborne Early Warning (UAEW) system. The new solution will be based on GA-ASI’s advanced MQ-9B unmanned aerial platform and integrated with Saab’s cutting-edge airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) sensors.

By combining Saab’s extensive experience in AEW&C technology with GA-ASI’s industry-leading expertise in unmanned aircraft systems, the collaboration aims to deliver a powerful and flexible intelligence-gathering capability. The integrated system will offer continuous surveillance and real-time situational awareness by monitoring specific areas over extended periods.

This partnership allows us to bring our advanced detection and tracking capabilities to a broader set of customers who require MQ-9B-based solutions tailored to their operational needs,” said Carl-Johan Bergholm, Head of Saab’s Surveillance business area. “This medium-altitude, unmanned AEW solution leverages the strengths of both companies and enhances our overall AEW&C portfolio with a new, innovative offering.

”Designed to complement Saab’s existing manned AEW&C systems—such as the GlobalEye—the unmanned solution expands operational flexibility for customers. It can be deployed independently or as part of a manned-unmanned team, enhancing mission efficiency across various platforms, including deployment from naval vessels. With its modular architecture and persistent surveillance capabilities, the new UAEW system is set to broaden defense and security options for militaries seeking enhanced early warning functionality in complex environments.
