Aviation News – Vietnamese leisure carrier Sun PhuQuoc Airways has finalized plans to add eight Airbus A330-200 wide-body aircraft to its operational fleet, marking a transformative step in its strategy to connect Phu Quoc with major international destinations. The strategic acquisition provides immediate wide-body capacity, serving as an operational bridge until the airline receives its first newly ordered Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners in 2031.
The newcomer carrier secured the eight A330-243 aircraft to accelerate its network expansion beyond regional routes. All eight jets previously flew in the fleet of American Airlines before being placed in long-term storage. Under the phased delivery timetable, Sun PhuQuoc Airways will take delivery of the first four aircraft in 2026, receiving two units in September, one in October, and another in December.
The remaining four wide-body jets will arrive during the first four months of 2027. Initial deployments will focus on expanding medium-haul services to Kazakhstan and Russia, alongside boosting capacity on high-demand Asian routes. As additional aircraft enter commercial service throughout 2027, the airline plans to launch long-haul flights connecting Phu Quoc to Australia, Japan, the Czech Republic, and Poland.
Operating twin-engine Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft dramatically increases the airline’s seat capacity and nonstop flight range compared to narrow-body jetliners. This operational leap enables Sun PhuQuoc Airways to transport higher passenger volumes over intercontinental distances while establishing Phu Quoc as a competitive international travel hub. The expanded cabin layout also supports a multi-class configuration, enhancing long-haul comfort and passenger throughput across key tourism corridors.
