Aviation News – EHang Holdings Limited (Nasdaq: EH) has completed Central Asia’s first pilotless passenger flight of an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in Astana, Kazakhstan. The successful demonstration of the EH216-S aircraft marks a major milestone in expanding advanced air mobility (AAM) solutions across Eurasian transportation corridors.
The landmark flight took place on August 10, 2026, during the Games of the Future 2026 event in the capital city. The EH216-S carried key dignitaries, including Nurlan Sauranbayev, Minister of Transport of Kazakhstan, across multiple demonstration routes over the venue. High-level officials from the Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan and regional government representatives observed the flights ground-side following Kazakhstan’s recent establishment of a comprehensive national regulatory framework for eVTOL operations, vertiports, and unmanned aircraft traffic management (UTM) systems in June 2026.
The demonstration builds upon a strategic partnership forged in 2025 between EHang and Allur Group, one of Kazakhstan’s largest automotive manufacturers, aimed at jointly commercializing autonomous aerial platforms across Central Asia. With this milestone, Kazakhstan becomes the 23rd country across five continents to host passenger-carrying flight demonstrations of the EH216-S, proving the system’s operational flexibility across diverse geographic, climatic, and regulatory environments.
Operationally, the EH216-S relies on fully autonomous flight technology governed by centralized command-and-control systems rather than onboard human pilots. The craft uses intelligent navigation algorithms, fail-safe redundancy systems, and point-to-point GNSS positioning to execute precise vertical takeoffs and landings without requiring conventional airport infrastructure. Initial regional operations will focus on 5-to-30-minute demonstration and sightseeing flights over national cultural landmarks, establishing a blueprint for eventual integration into broader urban air mobility (UAM) transit networks.
