Philippine Airlines Commits to Up to 20 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners for Fleet Modernization

Aviation News – Philippine Airlines has committed to purchasing up to 20 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner aircraft as part of a major fleet modernization effort. The strategic agreement between the Philippine flag carrier and US manufacturer Boeing includes 15 firm commitments for the flagship widebody jet alongside purchase options for five additional aircraft.

The commitment represents the largest widebody aircraft selection in the history of Philippine Airlines, marking a pivotal step in its long-haul growth strategy. Announced at the Farnborough International Airshow, the agreement strengthens a historic aerospace relationship that spans eight decades. As Asia’s first commercial airline, the carrier recently celebrated its 85th anniversary while advancing plans to elevate its international profile.

Once finalized, the incoming 787-10 Dreamliners will complement the carrier’s active long-haul fleet, which includes 10 Boeing 777 widebody jets. The agreement gives the airline greater flexibility to scale operations across its primary hubs in Manila and Cebu, serving high-demand routes across Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and North America.

Constructed largely from lightweight composite materials, the Boeing 787-10 delivers a 25 percent reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions compared to the older aircraft it replaces. The model offers the lowest operating cost per seat of any widebody jet in its class while accommodating between 300 and 375 passengers. Passengers also benefit from enhanced cabin features, including large dimmable windows, higher cabin humidity, and advanced technology designed to smooth out turbulence.

“This investment manifests our confidence in the future of Philippine Airlines and the continued growth of air travel,” said Lucio C. Tan III, president and chief operating officer of PAL Holdings, Inc. “The Boeing 787-10 will strengthen our medium and long-haul fleet, allowing us to provide an even better travel experience for our customers while improving operational efficiency and supporting our long-term sustainability goals.”

The addition of fuel-efficient widebody aircraft positions Philippine Airlines to capture growing passenger demand and expand its global network presence. Passengers and industry observers can monitor upcoming airline updates for confirmed delivery schedules, cabin seating configurations, and initial international route deployments.

This landmark agreement secures long-term widebody capability for Philippine Airlines while expanding an 80-year relationship with Boeing. By adopting the 787-10 Dreamliner, the airline combines increased passenger capacity with lower environmental impact and reduced operating costs. The decision establishes a clear trajectory for the flag carrier’s sustained international growth and operational efficiency.
