SMBC Aviation Capital Expands Fleet with Landmark Order for 100 Boeing 737 MAX Aircraft

Aviation News – Global leasing leader SMBC Aviation Capital has placed a firm order for 100 Boeing 737 MAX airplanes to meet growing global demand for fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft. The major deal includes 60 737-10 jets and 40 737-8 variants, strengthening airline leasing options across high-density passenger routes.

This transaction marks SMBC Aviation Capital’s initial purchase of the 737-10, representing the largest single order placed by an aircraft lessor for the platform’s highest-capacity model. The new acquisition increases the Dublin-headquartered lessor’s overall 737 MAX portfolio to 450 owned, managed, and committed aircraft.

The deal extends a two-decade partnership between Boeing [NYSE: BA] and SMBC Aviation Capital amid rising demand for larger narrowbody aircraft. With leasing companies holding roughly 20 percent of the total 737 MAX order backlog, this commitment underscores strong institutional trust in modern narrowbody economics.

Technically, the stretched 737-10 model seats up to 230 passengers with an operational range of 3,100 nautical miles (5,740 km), offering exceptional per-seat flight economics. Operating alongside the versatile 737-8, the combined narrowbody fleet delivers up to 20 percent lower fuel usage and carbon emissions compared to legacy aircraft. These operational efficiencies allow commercial airlines to scale passenger capacity at busy airports without increasing flight frequency.

Emphasizing the significance of the fleet expansion, Peter Barrett, Chief Executive Officer of SMBC Aviation Capital, stated: “This transaction represents a significant milestone for SMBC Aviation Capital and will ensure our airline customers have access to a long-term pipeline of new technology aircraft.” He added: “Our partnership with Boeing spans over two decades and this order reflects market dynamics as our airline and investor customers look to upgauge to the 737-10. This order will support their growth ambitions well into the next decade and reflects our strong confidence in the Boeing 737 MAX and sustained demand for fuel-efficient, technologically advanced narrowbody aircraft.”

Looking ahead, the arrival of these high-capacity narrowbody aircraft will help airlines expand long-term route networks while lowering operating overhead. Airline fleet planners and commercial operators should review their long-term capacity requirements now to secure access to these upcoming delivery streams.

The major order secures a steady supply of next-generation aircraft to satisfy projected long-term passenger traffic growth. By introducing the high-capacity 737-10, SMBC Aviation Capital diversifies its asset portfolio while delivering flexible operational options for commercial carriers. Moving forward, this expanded fleet partnership reinforces Boeing’s narrowbody program as global aviation accelerates its transition toward lower-emission air transport.
