Aviation News – Finland will purchase GBU-53 SDB II glide bombs from the United States to equip its future F-35 fighter jets, the Finnish Defence Ministry announced on Thursday. The acquisition strengthens Finland’s air-to-ground strike capabilities and further enhances the combat effectiveness of its growing fleet of advanced fighter aircraft.
The procurement represents a significant addition to Finland’s defense modernization efforts following its decision to acquire 64 Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II fighters in a deal valued at approximately $9.4 billion. The Nordic nation selected the F-35 in 2021 to replace its aging fleet of F/A-18 Hornet aircraft, making the purchase one of the largest defense investments in Finnish history. As a member of NATO, Finland continues to expand its military capabilities amid a changing European security environment.
The GBU-53 Small Diameter Bomb II (SDB II) is a precision-guided glide weapon designed to engage both stationary and moving targets in all weather conditions.
