Aviation News – The U.S. Air Force has awarded Boeing a $75 million Undefinitized Contract Action (UCA) to initiate initial production of the BSU-111/B Payload Delivery Unit (PDU) for the Joint Direct Attack Munition Long Range (JDAM LR) system. This agreement equips defense forces with low-cost, extended-range precision-strike capabilities capable of hitting targets over 300 nautical miles away.
The contract action follows Boeing’s internal investment of nearly $100 million dedicated to advancing the JDAM LR program from development to manufacturing. This defense acquisition formally authorizes Boeing to start production of the specialized payload units for the U.S. Navy, establishing a crucial production bridge between industry design and military fielding.
The funding milestone reflects an ongoing effort by defense planners to expand stand-off attack options while maintaining fiscal efficiency. By finalizing this agreement, both the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy gain a modernized weapon variant designed for complex operational environments where deep-strike reach proves paramount.
The JDAM LR integrates standard JDAM guidance tail kits and existing aircraft interfaces with a specialized wing kit and a compact turbojet engine. This architecture converts traditional 500-pound class (226-kilogram) gravity munitions into long-range precision assets suitable for conventional land strikes, maritime aerial-mining, and anti-ship operations. Because the system utilizes established JDAM manufacturing infrastructure, military branches can rapidly deploy these weapons across any aircraft already equipped to carry conventional JDAM inventories.

Scaling production of the BSU-111/B payload unit signals a shifts toward high-volume, cost-effective stand-off weaponry in modern military arsenals. Defense operators will leverage these versatile munitions to neutralize threats from safer standoff distances, minimizing flight risk while maximizing mission throughput.
