Aviation News – Joby Aviation has officially kicked off its 2026 Electric Skies Tour with historic flight demonstrations in San Francisco and New York City, marking a pivotal step toward the commercial launch of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) services. These landmark flights represent the first time point-to-point electric air taxi operations have been conducted between major international airports and urban heliports, proving the viability of emission-free regional travel.
The tour, timed to coincide with the United States’ 250th anniversary, began in March with multi-leg journeys across the Golden Gate Bridge before moving to New York in late April. In a significant regulatory breakthrough, Joby was named a primary partner in the White House-backed eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). This selection grants the company the opportunity to begin early operations across 11 states—including New York, Texas, and Florida—ahead of formal FAA type certification, utilizing both their piloted air taxi platform and the Superpilot™ autonomous technology.
Behind the scenes, the company’s manufacturing and certification momentum is accelerating. Joby recently achieved its SR3 audit with the FAA, a critical third-stage review that confirms test data meets federal safety expectations. Meanwhile, production has scaled significantly at facilities in California and Ohio, where composites production has surged to 2.5 times previous volumes. The fleet now includes the first FAA-conforming aircraft (N547JX) dedicated to Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) testing, with parts currently in production for eight additional aircraft.
Technically, Joby is expanding the boundaries of electric flight through its turbine-electric VTOL prototype, which recently completed a 148-mile flight at maximum take-off weight. By integrating a gas turbine with its core electric platform, the company is increasing range and payload capacity for longer regional routes. Furthermore, a new partnership with Air Space Intelligence (ASI) utilizes AI-powered 4D modeling to ensure these aircraft can be safely integrated into the busy national airspace system alongside traditional planes.
“The selection of Joby for a broad range of eIPP applications is a strong signal of future demand,” a company spokesperson noted regarding the manufacturing expansion. “We are scaling our operations to meet this interest, ensuring that our conforming aircraft and proprietary technology platforms are ready to transform urban mobility.”
This progress signals a shift from experimental flight to a scalable transportation industry. With a strong balance sheet of $2.5 billion in liquidity, Joby is well-positioned to complete the final FAA hurdles and begin commercial service later this year. The success of the Electric Skies Tour serves as a live proof-of-concept for a future where quiet, electric flight replaces gridlocked ground commutes.
Joby Aviation is rapidly transitioning from development to deployment as it prepares to lead the urban air mobility revolution. By securing federal partnerships and hitting technical milestones, the company has cleared the path for operations in nearly a dozen states. As the first conforming fleet takes shape, the dream of calling an electric air taxi is becoming a 2026 reality.
