Aviation News – Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has successfully completed major structural modifications on its first Airbus A330-300 converted freighter, signaling a critical milestone for the global logistics market. The aircraft is now undergoing ground testing in preparation for its maiden flight scheduled for the coming weeks.

IAI officially launched the A330-300BDSF (Bedek Dedicated Freighter) program in 2024 to meet the rising demand for mid-size, long-range cargo lifting. This specific airframe was recently removed from its jacks at IAI’s facility, marking the transition from heavy structural engineering to the final integration phase. The company aims to achieve full supplemental type certification by the end of this year, allowing the aircraft to enter commercial service.

The development comes at a time when global carriers are seeking more efficient alternatives to older cargo models. By repurposing existing passenger airframes, IAI provides a cost-effective solution for airlines looking to modernize their freight fleets. This conversion process involves reinforcing the floor, installing a large main-deck cargo door, and upgrading the aircraft’s systems to handle heavy payloads over transcontinental distances.

Technically, the A330-300 conversion offers a significant operational advantage due to its high volume and fuel efficiency. It fills a strategic gap between smaller narrow-body freighters and the largest heavy-lifters, providing versatile capacity for e-commerce and general freight. The successful removal of the aircraft from its jacks confirms that the new structural integrity meets the rigorous safety standards required for high-cycle cargo operations.
