Aviation News – In a historic first for bilateral military cooperation, Chilean Air Force crews successfully executed an air-to-air refueling mission for two U.S. F-35A Lightning II aircraft on April 4. This milestone demonstration of interoperability confirms the ability of these two nations to coordinate complex aerial maneuvers and maintain a continuous presence across the Western Hemisphere.

The mission took place as the U.S. Air Force’s F-35A Demonstration Team traveled to Santiago for the Feria Internacional del Aire y del Espacio 2026 (FIDAE). The stealth fighters departed from Eglin Air Force Base in Florida for a grueling ten-hour journey to the largest aerospace trade show in Latin America. Initially, a KC-135R Stratotanker from MacDill Air Force Base supported the aircraft during the first leg of the flight, conducting four refueling cycles per jet.

As the formation reached the border between Peru and Ecuador, the operation transitioned to the Chilean Air Force (FACh). A Chilean KC-135 Stratotanker assumed command of the refueling mission, delivering approximately 41,000 pounds of fuel to the American fighters. By refueling each F-35A four additional times, the Chilean crew ensured the jets could reach their destination safely, marking the first time a Chilean tanker has serviced this specific fifth-generation U.S. fighter in flight.

This operation highlights the technical compatibility between the KC-135 platform and the advanced F-35A, demonstrating that regional partners can provide essential logistical support for high-end assets. The successful fuel transfer near the Peru-Ecuador border serves as a proof of concept for “plug-and-play” interoperability, where international tankers can seamlessly replace one another to extend the operational range of combat aircraft.

“The mission showcased real-world coordination between trusted partners while reinforcing the ability to operate seamlessly across the hemisphere,” officials noted, emphasizing that such milestones are a significant step forward in bilateral airpower integration.

This success paves the way for more frequent combined operations and logistical sharing between the United States and Chile. As the F-35A becomes a more common sight in global airspaces, the proven ability of the FACh to support these platforms ensures that regional security can be maintained through shared resources. Aviation enthusiasts can expect to see the results of this partnership on display throughout the FIDAE 2026 event.

The successful refueling of the F-35A Lightning II by a Chilean tanker represents a new era of trust and technical capability in South American aviation. By bridging the gap between different national air forces, the U.S. and Chile have demonstrated that distance is no longer a barrier to rapid deployment. This achievement sets a high standard for future multinational exercises and strategic cooperation across the continent.
