Aviation News – A FlyArystan Almaty airport fire broke out onboard an aircraft during scheduled ground maintenance, leaving one Air Astana technician injured and grounding the jet.
The incident surfaced after footage shared on social media showed flames and thick smoke originating from inside the cabin at Kazakhstan’s major international hub. The low-cost carrier, a subsidiary of the Air Astana Group, confirmed the localized blaze occurred while ground crews were carrying out routine technical operations. Emergency response services at Almaty International Airport reacted immediately, extinguishing the flames before the fire could spread further throughout the airframe or adjacent airport facilities.
No passengers or flight crew were onboard at the time of the event, avoiding potential casualties inside the cabin. However, an Air Astana Group ground engineer sustained injuries during the response, received urgent medical treatment, and has since been discharged from the hospital. The affected aircraft has been temporarily removed from service to allow engineers to evaluate structural damage and perform necessary repairs.
Localized cabin fires during maintenance typically stem from electrical short circuits, thermal runaway in auxiliary systems, or flammable materials exposed during routine servicing. Ground incidents of this nature carry significant operational risks, as hidden wiring bundles and interior paneling can feed flames rapidly within enclosed cabin spaces. While FlyArystan’s flight schedule remains largely unaffected, the temporary loss of the aircraft will require fleet reshuffling until full airworthiness evaluations and structural repairs are completed.
