Aviation News – Dubai has achieved a global aviation milestone with the technical completion of the world’s first commercial vertiport at Dubai International Airport (DXB), paving the way for electric air taxi services. This flagship hub, designed to handle thousands of passengers annually, marks the beginning of a revolutionary era in urban air mobility.

On April 17, 2026, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Skyports Infrastructure officially showcased the finished facility. Spanning 3,100m² across four floors, the DXB vertiport serves as the primary node for a city-wide network. The project is part of a strategic partnership between the RTA, Skyports, and Joby Aviation, the California-based company that holds exclusive rights to operate air taxis in the emirate for six years.

The development follows years of planning and testing, including piloted flight trials conducted in the UAE since 2025. This specific location was chosen to provide seamless intermodal connectivity, linking the Emirates Metro Station directly to the air taxi terminal. While the DXB hub is now ready, additional vertiports are currently under construction at Dubai Marina, Dubai Mall, and Palm Jumeirah to complete the initial four-node launch network.

The vertiport is equipped to handle electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, specifically the Joby Aviation model, which can fly at speeds of up to 320km/h. Key technical features include the Global Electric Aviation Charging System (GEACS), which provides ultra-fast charging to ensure rapid turnaround times. Operationally, the facility can support 42,000 aircraft movements and 170,000 passengers per year, utilizing a hybrid regulatory framework that also allows for conventional helicopter traffic.

“With the world’s first commercial vertiport now in a technical position to take eVTOL flights, we are seeing aviation history in the making,” stated Duncan Walker, CEO of Skyports Infrastructure. He emphasized that this new class of infrastructure integrates the latest innovations to fundamentally change how people navigate dense urban environments.

This development signals a shift toward sustainable urban transport, with commercial flights expected to begin by the end of 2026. For residents and travelers, this means a journey from the airport to Palm Jumeirah will drop from 45 minutes by car to just 10 minutes by air.

The completion of the DXB vertiport cements Dubai’s position as a global leader in smart mobility. By integrating air taxis into the existing public transport ecosystem, the city is setting a blueprint for future megacities. As the remaining three stations reach completion, the vision of a quiet, emissions-free aerial commute will become a daily reality for thousands of commuters.
