Aviation News – Archer Strengthens Position in Advanced Air Mobility with Major Patent Acquisition

Archer Aviation Inc. has secured a major win in the race for eVTOL supremacy, acquiring Lilium GmbH’s extensive patent portfolio for €18 million. The deal, announced at NBAA 2025 in Las Vegas, expands Archer’s intellectual property base and reinforces its technological edge in the fast-evolving urban air mobility market.

The acquisition follows a competitive bid process concluded in October 2025. Lilium, founded in 2015, invested more than $1.5 billion in developing advanced electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) technologies. The portfolio includes approximately 300 patent assets covering innovations in ducted fans, propeller systems, battery management, flight controls, and high-voltage electrical systems. With this purchase, Archer’s global patent portfolio now exceeds 1,000 assets.

Technically, the newly acquired patents enhance Archer’s development of efficient, quiet, and safe eVTOL aircraft by integrating next-generation propulsion and energy systems. These technologies are expected to accelerate the certification and scalability of Archer’s production aircraft, aimed at revolutionizing short-range air transport in urban environments.

“This acquisition marks a pivotal step in advancing the future of sustainable air mobility,” said an Archer spokesperson. “By integrating Lilium’s pioneering technologies, we strengthen our capacity to deliver reliable, high-performance eVTOL aircraft to the global market.”

The move underscores growing consolidation in the advanced air mobility sector, as leading companies compete for technological leadership ahead of commercial launch milestones expected later this decade. Archer’s expanded patent base positions it strongly for upcoming certification phases and global market entry.

With this acquisition, Archer not only broadens its innovation pipeline but also signals a firm commitment to leading the eVTOL industry’s transition from concept to reality—bringing zero-emission air transport closer to everyday use.
