Bosnia and Herzegovina Confirms Order for Six AW119Kx Koala Helicopters After U.S. Inspection Visit

Aviation News – Bosnia and Herzegovina has confirmed the purchase of six AW119Kx Koala helicopters following a high-level inspection visit to Leonardo Helicopters US in Philadelphia, marking a significant step in strengthening the country’s military aviation capabilities.

The agreement was reinforced in April 2026 when Defence Minister Zukan Helez visited the U.S. facility for detailed inspections and flight tests. The visit validated Bosnia and Herzegovina’s selection of the AW119Kx Koala, a light single-engine helicopter developed by Leonardo S.p.A., and officially moved the programme into its implementation phase after months of evaluation and procurement planning.

The AW119Kx Koala is designed for versatility, capable of performing missions ranging from troop transport and medical evacuation to reconnaissance and training. Equipped with advanced avionics and strong performance in high-altitude and hot-weather conditions, the aircraft will enhance operational flexibility and readiness within the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly in challenging terrain.

A spokesperson for Leonardo Helicopters stated that the aircraft “will provide a reliable, modern, and mission-ready solution tailored to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s defence and security requirements,” emphasizing the platform’s adaptability and proven operational record.

Looking ahead, the delivery of the helicopters is expected to modernize Bosnia’s rotary-wing fleet and improve interoperability with NATO partners. The programme may also pave the way for further cooperation in training, maintenance, and future defence acquisitions.

The acquisition underscores Bosnia and Herzegovina’s broader efforts to upgrade its military capabilities and align with international standards. As the implementation phase begins, the focus will shift toward delivery timelines, pilot training, and operational integration, ensuring the helicopters are deployed effectively in the coming years.
