AviationNews – The Saudi Ministry of Defence has signed a landmark contract with Leonardo for the acquisition of four C-27J Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA). This strategic purchase significantly upgrades the Royal Saudi Naval Forces’ ability to counter surface and submarine threats while securing the Kingdom’s extensive coastline.
As the 21st global operator of the platform, Saudi Arabia is the first to procure the C-27J with a fully integrated maritime weapon system. This deal follows a 2025 agreement for two baseline units, reinforcing a growing partnership between Riyadh and the Italian aerospace giant. Deliveries for the new armed variants are scheduled to begin in 2029, marking a major milestone in the Kingdom’s military modernization.
The C-27J MPA is a high-tech evolution of the Spartan Next Generation, featuring an advanced mission suite called ATOS (Airborne Tactical Observation and Surveillance). This system fuses data from specialized sensors to track targets both above and below the waves. Most notably, the aircraft can carry a diverse payload of torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and depth charges. Despite this heavy armament, the cabin remains flexible; the mission consoles can be removed to reconfigure the plane for cargo transport or search and rescue (SAR) duties in under an hour.
“This achievement confirms the strong bond between Leonardo and the Kingdom,” a company representative stated. “The C-27J’s unique ability to combine multi-domain surveillance with a significant weapons payload provides a tailored solution for the most challenging modern maritime requirements.”
The introduction of the C-27J MPA ensures Saudi Arabia remains a dominant maritime power in the region through the end of the decade and beyond. By investing in a platform that balances combat lethality with logistical versatility, the Kingdom is well-positioned to handle everything from high-intensity naval warfare to humanitarian disaster response.
The contract for four armed C-27J Spartans represents a shift toward more agile, multi-role naval aviation. With its ability to operate from short, unprepared runways while carrying heavy ordnance, the “Spartan” provides a versatile shield for Saudi waters.
