Argentina Retires Final A-4AR Fightinghawk, Ending Decades of ‘Skyhawk’ Service

Aviation News – Argentina’s Air Force has officially retired its A-4AR Fightinghawk fleet, marking the end of an era for the iconic Douglas A-4 Skyhawk family after decades of service in the country’s military aviation history.

The withdrawal of the A-4AR Fightinghawk closes a historic chapter for Argentina’s armed forces. The aircraft was the last operational variant of the legendary “Scooter” in Argentine service, following the earlier retirement of the A-4B, A-4C, and A-4Q—all of which played notable roles, including combat operations during the Falklands/Malvinas War in 1982. With Argentina’s decision, the Brazilian Navy now becomes the last military operator in the world still flying the veteran attack aircraft.

Originally developed in the 1950s by Douglas Aircraft Company, the A-4 Skyhawk earned a global reputation for reliability, simplicity, and combat effectiveness. Argentina’s upgraded A-4AR Fightinghawk, introduced in the late 1990s, featured modern avionics and improved mission systems, extending the operational life of the aging platform and allowing it to remain relevant well into the 21st century.
