Aviation News – General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) and the Dutch Ministry of Defence (MoD) have signed a new agreement to jointly develop an innovative small unmanned aircraft system (SUAS), enhancing Europe’s defense and surveillance capabilities.

Signed in Washington on October 16, 2025, the agreement marks the beginning of a long-term strategic partnership between GA-ASI and the Dutch MoD. The collaboration focuses on designing a low-cost, multi-role SUAS capable of delivering advanced intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations. Dutch company VDL Defentec will lead local manufacturing, reinforcing the Netherlands’ role in trans-Atlantic defense cooperation.

The new SUAS will be adaptable for a variety of missions, hosting multiple payloads and technologies to meet evolving defense needs. Its design aims to provide NATO allies and Ukraine with a versatile, scalable, and cost-effective ISR solution. Initial flight testing is expected before the end of 2025, with low-rate production to begin in 2026 across the U.S. and the Netherlands.

“This contract is the first step in a strategic partnership with the Dutch MoD that will ultimately contribute to the defense of Ukraine and NATO by creating a versatile European defense system,” said GA-ASI CEO Linden Blue.

Dutch Minister for Arms Procurement and Personnel Gijs Tuinman emphasized the importance of the collaboration, saying, “Together with GA we will be increasing innovative SUAS capabilities and advancing technical knowhow in the Netherlands. This project strengthens our trans-Atlantic ties and supports Europe’s collective security.”

Looking forward, the partnership aims to position the Netherlands as a regional hub for advanced drone manufacturing and innovation. By combining American unmanned expertise with Dutch industrial strength, the initiative will support NATO’s technological edge while boosting local defense capabilities.

The GA-ASI–Dutch MoD alliance represents a new chapter in Europe’s defense evolution—fusing innovation, collaboration, and readiness in response to modern security challenges.
