Aviation News – Air New Zealand’s first all-electric aircraft, the BETA ALIA CX300, completed its maiden test flight from Tauranga Airport on October 17, 2025, marking a major step toward sustainable aviation in the country.
The aircraft, developed by U.S.-based BETA Technologies, arrived in New Zealand earlier this month and was officially welcomed with a sunrise blessing ceremony in Tauranga. Following its inaugural flight, the ALIA CX300 flew to Hamilton International Airport, where it will be based for the next phase of testing before relocating to Wellington Airport in December 2025. Air New Zealand has leased the aircraft for four months as part of a demonstrator program to assess its performance in local conditions and support pilot and engineer training.
The BETA ALIA CX300 is a fully electric, battery-powered aircraft designed for short-haul and regional routes. It can carry up to five passengers or equivalent cargo and is optimized for low-noise, zero-emission flight. Over the coming months, Air New Zealand and BETA Technologies will test the aircraft under varied operational conditions, including flights between Wellington and Blenheim, to evaluate its efficiency and adaptability within New Zealand’s airspace and terrain.
