Aviation News – Belgium Takes Delivery of First F-35A Jets

The Belgian Air Force officially welcomed its first F-35A Lightning II aircraft at Florennes Air Base on Monday, October 13 (landing 15:15 local time), marking a historic step in the country’s transition to fifth-generation airpower and strengthening its role within NATO’s defense network.

According to the Belgian Ministry of Defence, the first four aircraft — serial numbers FL009 to FL012 — have completed initial testing and training in the U.S. and are now being delivered to Belgium to form the foundation of the nation’s F-35 fleet.

The arrival ceremony, hosted at the 2nd Tactical Wing (2W Tac), included the inauguration of newly built F-35 facilities and speeches by senior defense and government officials. Belgium ordered 34 F-35A aircraft in 2018 as part of a $6.5 billion modernization program to replace its aging F-16 fleet and enhance operational capabilities in line with NATO standards.

The F-35A brings advanced stealth technology, sensor fusion, and networked warfare capabilities, allowing Belgian pilots to detect, track, and engage threats with greater precision and survivability. The aircraft will be operated by the 1st Squadron “Stingers” at Florennes, with future deployments planned for Kleine-Brogel Air Base later in the decade.

“Today’s arrival of the F-35 marks a decisive leap forward for Belgium’s defense and technological ambitions,” said Defence Minister Ludivine Dedonder. “This milestone ensures that our air force remains ready to protect Belgian and European airspace for decades to come.”

The arrival of the F-35A fleet signals a new era of interoperability for Belgium, aligning the nation’s air capabilities with leading NATO partners. Operational conversion training for Belgian pilots is ongoing, with full operational capability expected by 2027.

In the coming years, the F-35 program is expected to boost Belgium’s defense readiness, industrial participation, and technological innovation, ensuring the nation’s continued contribution to global security and allied operations.
