Aviation News – Belgium Welcomes Its First F-35s Under Royal Supervision

Three Belgian F-35 fighter jets landed this afternoon at Florennes Air Base, marking a historic milestone for Belgium’s Air Force modernization. The arrival was witnessed by King Philippe and Defense Minister Theo Francken (N-VA), underscoring the national importance of the event as Belgium officially transitions into the fifth-generation fighter era.

The delivery included three of the four scheduled aircraft, with one jet, designated FL011, remaining grounded on the Azores after a precautionary stop due to “technical uncertainty regarding airworthiness,” according to the Ministry of Defence. The three aircraft continued their journey and completed the final leg to Florennes, where they were received with full military honors. The arrival symbolizes a major step in Belgium’s €4 billion procurement program to replace its aging F-16 fleet with the advanced Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II.

Operationally, the F-35 offers stealth capability, advanced sensor fusion, and networked data-sharing, giving the Belgian Air Force a significant leap in intelligence, surveillance, and combat capability. The aircraft’s ability to operate seamlessly with NATO allies will strengthen Belgium’s role in joint European and transatlantic defense missions.

When there is doubt, there is no doubt,” said Major General Geert De Decker, Commander of the Belgian Air Force, during a press conference. “This incident highlights our absolute commitment to safety and precision in every phase of operations.”

Eight additional Belgian F-35s are already stationed at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, where Belgian pilots are undergoing training before full operational deployment begins in Belgium. The integration of the F-35 fleet is expected to reshape the Air Force’s operational posture and enhance the country’s defense readiness for decades to come.

The arrival of the first F-35s marks the beginning of a new era for Belgian defense aviation. With further deliveries scheduled in the coming years, Belgium’s transition to the fifth-generation platform will reinforce its position as a capable and reliable partner within NATO’s collective air power.
