RAF’s First E-7 Wedgetail Arrives at RAF Lossiemouth in Major Airborne Surveillance Milestone

The first Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning (AEW) aircraft, destined to serve with the RAF, has arrived at RAF Lossiemouth on 21 May 26. The aircraft was flown to RAF Lossiemouth by a mixed crew of personnel from Boeing UK and the RAF from STS Aviation Services at Birmingham Airport. The Wedgetail AEW Mk1 is the RAF’s next-generation airborne early warning and control aircraft, designed to deliver long-range surveillance, battle management, and command and control for air and joint operations.

Aviation News – The first Boeing E-7 Wedgetail AEW Mk1 aircraft for the Royal Air Force (RAF) has arrived at RAF Lossiemouth, marking a major step toward the UK’s future airborne early warning and control capability. The aircraft’s arrival signals continued progress in the UK’s effort to modernize its airborne surveillance and battle management fleet.

The aircraft, registered WT001, landed at RAF Lossiemouth on 21 May after departing from STS Aviation Services at Birmingham Airport. As the first aircraft in the new fleet, it will continue its Test and Evaluation phase at its future Main Operating Base. The testing programme, conducted jointly between MOD Boscombe Down and RAF Lossiemouth, is designed to ensure the aircraft’s safe and effective transition into operational RAF service before formal handover from Boeing UK to 8 Squadron.

The E-7 Wedgetail is equipped with advanced airborne radar and battle management systems designed to detect, track and coordinate air and maritime threats over long distances. Its introduction will significantly strengthen UK airborne command-and-control capabilities while creating operational efficiencies alongside the RAF’s Poseidon P-8 fleet, as both aircraft share the proven Boeing 737 Next Generation airframe platform.
