Czech Citizens Send a “Black Hawk” of Hope to Ukraine—Over 20,000 Strong

In a storyline worthy of Hollywood, a group of heroes from everyday life—more than 20,600 Czech and Slovak donors—came together under the banner “Dárek pro Putina” (“A Gift for Putin”) and raised enough to send a third UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter to Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence (HUR).

The Mission That Captured Hearts (and Crowdfunding Dollars)

Launched in November 2023, this crowdfunding drive took off with the aim of delivering a Black Hawk from the U.S.—where the prices were far friendlier—straight into Ukrainian hands. This specific model cost approximately 72–73 million CZK (~€2.8–3 million), a sum raised by tens of thousands rallying across borders for a single, electrifying goal.

Here’s what makes it pure power:

  • The fundraising steamrolled through obstacles—fundraising dips, debates over priorities—but surged again when political headlines fired up public spirit.
  • The entire purchase, as one forerunner crowdfund, is historic: no other nation’s citizens have ever bought a military helicopter for Ukraine before.
  • The chopper, nicknamed “Čestmír” (a play on “honor and peace”), was bought in the U.S., disassembled, shipped in containers, and reassembled before its triumphant delivery to Ukraine.

At the handover, Ukrainian pilots wasted no time putting the aircraft through its paces. “They were very impressed… maneuverability, speed, running costs—completely unmatched,” said campaign coordinator Martin Ondráček.

How the Black Hawk Fits Into Ukraine’s Arsenal

  • Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence (HUR) already operates two UH-60s—and this delivery brings them one step closer to a more modern, versatile fleet.
  • The helicopter is more than a machine—it’s a symbol. It enhances Ukraine’s mobility, evacuation capability, and special operations flexibility at a time when Soviet-era Mi-8s and Mi-24s just don’t cut it.
  • And there’s a string of victories behind the initiative: previous campaigns funded 15 Viktor anti-air systems, 1,000 anti-tank launchers, a T-72 tank, an RM-70 MLRS, and much more—making “Gift for Putin” a legend in grassroots war aid.

Why This Matters (Beyond the Buzz)

This isn’t just military hardware—it’s a morale builder, a demonstration of civilian solidarity, and a bold statement to the world: when governments wobble, citizens pick up the slack. It’s civic activism turned into stupendous real-world impact, with each crowdfunded crown carrying both weight and meaning.
