Denmark, Finland, and Sweden have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to join NATO’s Multinational Multi-Role Tanker Transport Fleet (MMF), marking a strategic step to enhance joint regional capabilities in air mobility, aerial refueling, and aeromedical evacuation.

The agreement, signed on 5 June by the defense ministers of the three nations, aligns with broader efforts under the Nordic Defence Cooperation (NORDEFCO), which aims to strengthen military collaboration among northern NATO members.

By joining the MMF, the three Nordic countries will become part of a pooling-and-sharing initiative led by the Netherlands. The fleet currently operates nine Airbus A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft, managed by the Multinational MRTT Unit (MMU). The MMU is headquartered at Eindhoven Air Base in the Netherlands, with a second base at Cologne-Wahn Air Base in Germany.

Denmark and Norway had previously expressed their interest in the MMF program, and this move now formally brings Finland and Sweden into the fold, reflecting growing Nordic alignment on defense priorities within the NATO framework.
