Aviation News – The Fuerza Aérea del Peru (FAP) is set to significantly bolster its tactical airlift capabilities following the approval of a €60 million (240 million sol) budget for the acquisition of new C-27J Spartan Next Generation (NG) aircraft. This investment secures the first of two planned units, ensuring the Peruvian military maintains its edge in regional logistics and humanitarian response.
The recent budget greenlight follows an initial order placed in July 2024, marking a major expansion of Peru’s existing fleet. The FAP currently operates four Spartans acquired through contracts signed in 2013 and 2014. This new phase of development will see the first NG variant delivered in 2026, with a second aircraft tentatively scheduled for 2027 pending subsequent budget approvals. This strategic move fulfills long-standing options for additional aircraft negotiated since the original procurement.
The C-27J Spartan NG features advanced avionics and aerodynamic winglets, which enhance fuel efficiency and performance in “hot and high” conditions—a critical requirement for navigating the Andes mountains. Its multi-mission versatility allows the cargo bay to be rapidly reconfigured for troop transport, medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), and disaster relief. The aircraft’s ability to operate from unprepared, short runways ensures that the FAP can reach the most remote regions of the country where larger transporters cannot land.
