Greece invests €155m in new firefighting aircraft to battle worsening wildfires

Aviation News – Greece has signed a €155 million contract for 25 Air Tractor AT-802 firefighting aircraft, strengthening its aerial firefighting capabilities amid increasingly destructive wildfire seasons.

The deal, awarded to Air Tractor Europe after an international tender, includes funding from EU programs such as the Recovery and Resilience Facility and the European Regional Development Fund, alongside a European Investment Bank loan. The decision, announced by the Hellenic Air Force (HAF), reflects the government’s effort to modernize firefighting resources following years of record-breaking blazes.

The fleet will comprise 19 single-seat AT-802s and six amphibious Fire Boss dual-seaters, capable of both land and water operations. While Greece has previously leased AT-802s during fire seasons, this marks the first time the country will directly own and operate them. The aircraft will be stationed at Dekelia/Tatoi Air Base and flown by the 359 MED MAEDY Squadron, which supports search and rescue and civil protection missions.

“These new aircraft represent a vital step in strengthening Greece’s frontline defense against wildfires,” said a HAF spokesperson. “Owning this fleet ensures faster response times, better coordination, and improved protection for our citizens and environment.”

The investment is part of a broader strategy to adapt to climate-driven challenges. With hotter summers fueling longer fire seasons across southern Europe, Greece’s purchase highlights the urgency of expanding aerial firefighting fleets to protect lives, communities, and ecosystems.

By acquiring the Air Tractors, Greece positions itself to respond more swiftly to emergencies while reducing reliance on leased equipment. The move underscores how European nations are upgrading civil protection capabilities to meet mounting environmental threats.
