Qatar-Gifted Boeing 747 Cleared as Interim Air Force One Ahead of Summer Service

Aviation News – The U.S. Air Force has confirmed that a modified Boeing 747, designated VC-25B Bridge, is ready to serve as an interim Air Force One, marking a key step in presidential airlift modernization.

The announcement, made on May 1, 2026, follows the completion of modification and flight testing on the aircraft, originally gifted by the government of Qatar. The jet is now undergoing painting in a new red, white, and blue livery ahead of its expected entry into service this summer.

The aircraft, based on the Boeing 747 platform, was selected as a temporary solution to bridge the gap until the next-generation presidential fleet becomes fully operational. The VC-25B Bridge program reflects ongoing efforts by the U.S. Air Force to maintain uninterrupted executive transport capability while delays continue in the broader modernization program.

Extensive upgrades were carried out to meet the stringent requirements of presidential operations. These include secure communications systems, defensive countermeasures, and specialized interior configurations. As an interim Air Force One, the aircraft ensures continuity of command and global mobility for the U.S. President.
