KLM Receives First Airbus A350-900, Marking New Era for Its Long-Haul Fleet

Aviation News – KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has officially taken delivery of its first Airbus A350-941 (PH-NZA), marking a major step forward in modernizing its long-haul operations. The aircraft touched down at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, receiving a traditional water cannon salute before making a special stop for local spotters.

The arrival of the PH-NZA marks the beginning of an ambitious fleet transition for the Dutch carrier. KLM plans to deploy this new aircraft type to gradually phase out its older long-haul fleet, specifically replacing its Airbus A330-200, Airbus A330-300, and Boeing 777-200 models over the coming years.

This delivery represents the first of 22 Airbus A350-900 aircraft ordered directly by KLM. The order forms part of a larger joint agreement by the Air France-KLM Group for 50 A350-900 and A350-1000 aircraft, with options reserved for an additional 40 jets to support long-term international expansion.

Technically, the Airbus A350 delivers significant operational efficiency, offering substantially lower fuel burn and reduced carbon emissions compared to previous generation widebody jets. Following its arrival, KLM will integrate the aircraft into its active network, with the first commercial flight scheduled to depart for Toronto on October 30.

”Receiving our first Airbus A350 represents a vital milestone in our strategy to build a quieter, cleaner, and more efficient fleet,” stated a KLM spokesperson. “This aircraft allows us to offer our passengers enhanced onboard comfort while delivering on our environmental commitments.”

Following a company naming tradition, KLM is celebrating Dutch cultural heritage by naming its new fleet after famous national artworks. The initial flagship aircraft bears the name ‘De Nachtwacht’, while the second upcoming delivery (PH-ZNB) will receive the name ‘Het Meisje met de Parel’.
