AviationNews – The United States Department of Transportation has granted Fiji Airways expanded operational rights, providing the South Pacific flag carrier with enhanced flexibility across transpacific passenger and cargo corridors. The regulatory clearance strengthens the airline’s long-haul network and boosts air links connecting North America, the Pacific Islands, Australia, and New Zealand.
The provisional regulatory approval authorizes Fiji Airways to operate scheduled and charter services for passengers, cargo, and mail between points beyond Fiji, through its island hub, and continuing to destinations in the United States and beyond. Valid for two years under the bilateral air transport agreement between both nations, the decision also covers dedicated freight and mail transport to third-party markets. The development builds upon the carrier’s active North American presence, which already includes direct services from Nadi International Airport to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu, and Dallas/Fort Worth.
From an operational perspective, the expanded beyond-rights allow the airline to optimize its widebody fleet, headlined by fuel-efficient Airbus A350-900 and Airbus A330 aircraft. By channeling transit traffic through its Nadi hub, Fiji Airways can more effectively combine Australasian passenger streams with high-yield freight across extended intercontinental sectors, improving load factors and aircraft utilization.
“Securing expanded traffic rights provides vital commercial agility as we deepen our footprint across the Pacific,” stated an airline network development representative. “This authorization enhances our ability to connect travelers and cargo seamlessly between Oceania and North America while unlocking new operational synergies.”
Looking ahead, the broadened traffic rights support the airline’s deeper integration into the oneworld alliance and facilitate wider codeshare opportunities across the Americas. Industry partners and travelers can monitor upcoming flight schedules and interline itineraries through official airline distribution channels as commercial rollouts advance.
The expanded agreement cements Fiji Airways’ role as an essential transpacific conduit between Oceania and the Western Hemisphere. With greater operational freedom and strategic hub capabilities, the carrier is well positioned to navigate competitive long-haul markets and drive economic growth across the Pacific region.
