Rolls-Royce and Reliance Team Up to Build India’s AMCA Stealth Fighter Engine



Aviation News – British propulsion giant Rolls-Royce has joined forces with India’s Reliance Industries to co-develop a sovereign combat jet engine for the country’s 5th-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). Announced on August 14, 2026, the high-profile industry partnership aims to establish a complete homegrown power and propulsion ecosystem for India’s military aviation sector.

​Under the framework of the strategic collaboration, the two industrial heavyweights will explore establishing a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex within India. The proposed complex is envisioned as a national center of excellence that covers the entire aero-engine lifecycle—spanning preliminary design, indigenous development, specialized manufacturing, testing, and long-term through-life support. The joint endeavor seeks to significantly reduce India’s historical dependence on foreign powerplants for front-line military aircraft while fostering sovereign intellectual property.

​The initiative directly aligns with New Delhi’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) program, injecting private sector manufacturing scale into defense technology projects traditionally managed by state-owned enterprises. The twin-engine AMCA stealth fighter, spearheaded by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), represents India’s flagship air dominance program. By embedding an end-to-end engine development capability locally, the venture creates an industrial roadmap that extends far beyond the immediate fighter program into broader military, civil aerospace, and future energy applications.

​Developing high-thrust military turbofans represents one of the most complex challenges in aerospace engineering, requiring advanced single-crystal turbine blade metallurgy, high-temperature thermal barrier coatings, and sophisticated digital full-authority digital engine controls (FADEC). The proposed clean-sheet 120 kN class powerplant is intended to grant the AMCA true supercruise capability—allowing sustained supersonic flight without fuel-thirsty afterburners—while ensuring thermal and power management systems can support next-generation avionics and sensors. Managing these extreme aerothermal loads safely demands proven global propulsion architecture combined with precision local manufacturing.
