In mid-August 2026, the United States Army awarded Airbus a significant $115 million contract to supply ten firm UH-72B Lakota helicopters, with an option for two additional aircraft. These versatile rotorcraft are destined for the Army National Guard, marking a critical step in replacing older airframes and modernizing capabilities. Deliveries of the newly ordered helicopters are scheduled to commence in 2027 and run through 2029. The entire assembly process will take place at the Airbus production facility located in Columbus, Mississippi, which has consistently delivered on previous Lakota contracts.
The UH-72B represents a major technological leap over its predecessor, drawing from the highly successful commercial H145 platform. It features a cutting-edge five-bladed main rotor, twin Safran Arriel 2E engines, and a Fenestron shrouded tail rotor, which significantly enhances flight performance and safety.
