Aviation News – Electra has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the City of Helsinki and Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences to explore Electra Ultra Short aircraft Helsinki-Tallinn routes, bringing high-speed regional air mobility to the Gulf of Finland.
The strategic collaboration will evaluate how Direct Aviation can streamline regional connectivity between the twin capital cities. Separated by just 80 kilometers across the Gulf of Finland, Helsinki and Tallinn generate approximately 7.5 million passenger trips every year due to deep economic, cultural, and tourism ties. Despite the short geographic distance, current transit options create significant friction for commuters. Maritime ferry crossings take over two hours—excluding additional time spent traveling to terminals and boarding—while traditional commercial flights require long drives to international hubs and lengthy security checkpoints.
Direct Aviation aims to solve this travel bottleneck by flying passengers directly from where their journeys start to where they want to end. The initiative focuses on deploying compact access points positioned close to urban centers, allowing regional travelers to bypass traditional airport hubs, long highway drives, and rigid ferry schedules. Beyond the primary Helsinki-Tallinn corridor, the partnership will also analyze potential secondary destinations across the region to benefit residents, business travelers, and visitors alike.
Operationally, the service relies on Electra’s specialized Ultra Short aircraft design, which is engineered to take off and land in as little as 50 meters (150 feet). By utilizing blown-lift technology and quiet propulsion systems, these aircraft can operate safely out of tiny footprints, such as repurposed urban spaces or small regional lots, without disrupting surrounding communities. Operating away from congested commercial airports reduces turnaround times, lowers infrastructure expenses, and opens up sustainable point-to-point transit corridors across short water bodies.
“Helsinki and Tallinn represent a natural Direct Aviation market with high travel demand, short geographic distances, and excessive friction in the existing transit loop,” stated an advanced mobility program executive. “Studying infrastructure requirements, passenger flows, and operating economics together allows us to establish a viable roadmap for faster, quieter, and far more direct regional connectivity.”
As joint feasibility studies get underway, the project represents a major step forward for urban air mobility integration in Northern Europe. Successfully establishing compact infrastructure and Ultra Short flight corridors in Finland could set a scalable blueprint for regional short-haul air travel worldwide.
