Biman Bangladesh Airlines Nears Major Airbus Deal to Build Competitive Mixed Fleet

AviationNews – Biman Bangladesh Airlines is preparing to finalize a significant acquisition of ten Airbus aircraft, comprising four A350-900 widebody jets and six A321neo narrowbody aircraft. Expected to be signed by August 31, 2026, this move marks a strategic shift toward establishing a sustainable, mixed-fleet operation alongside recent Boeing acquisitions.

The European aerospace manufacturer recently submitted a revised proposal that reduces its original offer but perfectly aligns with the airline’s updated capacity requirements. This 10-aircraft deal follows the flag carrier’s $3.7 billion agreement finalized in April 2026 to purchase 14 Boeing jets. During high-level diplomatic meetings in mid-July, envoys from France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, and the European Union pledged their full backing for the national carrier’s transition to a dual-manufacturer strategy, effectively breaking decades of single-supplier dominance.

Integrating both the A350-900 and the A321neo allows Biman to optimize its route network with pinpoint efficiency. The A350-900 offers exceptional long-range performance and superior fuel economy, ideal for expanding intercontinental routes deep into Europe. Meanwhile, the highly versatile A321neo delivers unmatched economics for high-demand, medium-haul sectors across Asia and the Gulf, where deploying widebody capacity remains commercially unviable.

“The government has decided to move ahead with the purchase of 10 Airbus aircraft… We expect to sign the agreement by August 31,” stated M Rashiduzzaman Millat, Bangladesh’s State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism.

While the new Airbus aircraft are scheduled for delivery starting in 2031, Biman plans to temporarily bridge the capacity gap by leasing up to ten aircraft by next year. Operating a mixed Boeing-Airbus fleet demands complex investments in separate crew training, maintenance infrastructure, and spare parts supply chains. However, this diversification grants the airline greater bargaining power with global suppliers and the exact fleet agility needed to capitalize on the upcoming Third Terminal expansion at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

By embracing both global aerospace leaders, Bangladesh positions its national carrier to become a formidable regional aviation hub. Expanding the fleet to a targeted 47 aircraft by the 2034-35 fiscal year will ultimately drive international connectivity, boost inbound tourism, and elevate the country’s economic standing.
