Aviation News – Spain to enhance its aerial firefighting capabilities by equipping Airbus A400M military transport aircraft with specialized firefighting kits for the upcoming summer season. President Pedro Sánchez announced the strategic acquisition on May 21, 2026, marking a significant upgrade in the nation’s ability to combat large-scale wildfires.
The decision follows several years of successful testing by the French and Spanish air forces, proving the aircraft’s versatility in emergency response roles. The Spanish government, led by Sánchez and Defense Minister Margarita Robles, presented this initiative at the Torrejón de Ardoz Air Base as a cornerstone of their annual summer firefighting campaign. By utilizing existing military assets, the state aims to provide a more robust and rapid response to the increasing threat of forest fires across the Iberian Peninsula.
This development integrates the Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) system, a specialized design that allows the aircraft to transition from a cargo carrier to a water bomber without permanent modifications.
