Brazilian aerospace giant Embraer and American defense leader Northrop Grumman announced a strategic collaboration on February 19, 2026, to evolve the KC-390 Millennium aircraft. The partnership aims to equip the multi-mission platform with an advanced aerial refueling boom, specifically designed to meet the rigorous requirements of the United States Air Force and international allied nations.
The agreement, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), focuses on bridging a critical gap in global air mobility and “agile combat employment.” By combining Northrop Grumman’s expertise in mission systems integration with Embraer’s proven airframe, the teams intend to transform the KC-390 into a high-performance tactical tanker. This development is particularly significant for NATO allies, such as the Netherlands and Czechia, who require boom-based refueling for their growing fleets of F-35 fighter jets.
Technically, the upgrade will see a centerline-mounted refueling boom installed to complement the aircraft’s existing dual underwing hose-and-drogue pods. This “three-point” configuration allows the KC-390 to support a wider variety of aircraft types in a single mission. The proposed autonomous boom technology is expected to increase operational safety and efficiency while maintaining the aircraft’s ability to operate from austere, short, or unpaved runways, a key requirement for modern dispersed operations.
This collaboration positions the KC-390 as a formidable contender for the U.S. Air Force’s Next-Generation Air Refueling System (NGAS) program. By establishing a local footprint and leveraging Northrop’s domestic supply chain, the partnership seeks to offer a cost-effective, “off-the-shelf” solution that can be rapidly deployed to the warfighter.
