Aviation News – AirAsia has signed a historic purchase agreement for 150 Airbus A220-300 aircraft, marking the largest single order for the model and pushing the program past the 1,000-order milestone. This strategic acquisition positions the Malaysian carrier as a key operator of the fuel-efficient jet, significantly enhancing its connectivity across Southeast and Central Asia.
The agreement was formalized during a high-profile ceremony at the Airbus facility in Mirabel, Canada, attended by Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A, and Lars Wagner, CEO of Commercial Aircraft at Airbus. High-ranking officials, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Quebec Premier Christine Frechette, were present to witness the signing. This deal marks AirAsia’s debut as an A220 customer, integrating the versatile narrow-body jet into its extensive all-Airbus fleet.
By selecting the latest generation A220-300, AirAsia aims to optimize its network growth by deploying the aircraft on medium-haul routes. This move allows the airline to transition its larger aircraft to longer-range international services while maintaining high frequency on regional paths. The development underscores a significant commitment to operational efficiency and market dominance within the ASEAN region.
Technically, AirAsia will serve as the launch customer for a new high-capacity cabin configuration featuring 160 seats. This layout is achieved through the integration of an additional overwing exit on each side of the fuselage, maximizing passenger volume without compromising safety standards. The aircraft’s advanced aerodynamics and engine technology provide the range and flexibility required to reach new destinations in Central Asia.
