Ukraine Hits Russian Aircraft Production Plant Deep Inside Russia

Aviation News – Ukraine’s military has targeted two Russian aviation facilities, including a key production site operated by United Aircraft Corporation, in a long-range strike aimed at disrupting military transport aircraft production.

According to Ukraine’s General Staff, the attack on the Aviastar plant in Ulyanovsk took place on March 16, alongside another strike in the Novgorod region. The Aviastar facility is a major industrial asset within Russia’s aerospace sector, producing Ilyushin Il-76MD-90A transport aircraft and Ilyushin Il-78M-90A aerial refueling planes, while also maintaining Antonov An-124 “Ruslan” cargo aircraft. Located roughly 800 kilometers from Ukraine’s border, the site represents a deep strategic target.

The Aviastar plant plays a critical role in sustaining Russia’s heavy airlift and refueling capabilities, which are essential for long-range troop deployment and logistics. By targeting production and maintenance infrastructure, Ukraine aims to degrade Russia’s ability to repair and field large transport aircraft, potentially affecting operational readiness across multiple fronts.

A Ukrainian military spokesperson said the strikes were intended to “reduce the enemy’s capacity to support its armed forces through strategic aviation assets,” underscoring the importance of disrupting supply chains and maintenance hubs behind the front lines.

The attack signals Ukraine’s growing capability to conduct long-range precision strikes against high-value industrial targets inside Russia. Analysts suggest such operations could force Moscow to disperse or reinforce critical aviation infrastructure, increasing costs and complicating logistics.

The strikes highlight an evolving phase of the conflict, where industrial and logistical targets are increasingly in focus. If sustained, this strategy could gradually erode Russia’s ability to project airlift power, while also demonstrating Ukraine’s expanding operational reach.
