The British Army has announced a £10 million investment into Project NYX, an ambitious program aimed at developing fully autonomous drones designed to fly alongside Apache attack helicopters. This initiative marks a crucial shift in modern warfare, leveraging unmanned systems to directly enhance the safety and combat effectiveness of manned platforms.
The Ministry of Defence has selected four leading defense contractors to compete for the ultimate contract: Anduril Industries, BAE Systems Operations, Tekever, and Thales UK. Over the coming months, each company will develop its own unique drone designs. By autumn 2026, the ministry plans to select up to two finalists tasked with building and testing physical prototypes.
The necessity for this development stems from escalating threats in contested airspace. While the Apache AH-64E remains one of the world’s most advanced attack helicopters, modern air defense systems and adversary drone swarms pose a growing risk to crews. Project NYX aims to mitigate these dangers by spreading tactical workloads and operational risks across a network of supporting aircraft.
Technically, the drone operates as a so-called ‘loyal wingman’. This means the unmanned aircraft autonomously executes tasks such as reconnaissance, surveillance, or electronic jamming while maintaining a tight formation with the helicopter. Driven by artificial intelligence, these systems can counter threats at lightning speed, significantly boosting the Apache’s survival rate during complex combat missions.
In the future, these collaborative systems will likely become standard across air and land forces. The outcomes of the upcoming testing phase will determine how rapidly the British military can deploy these unmanned aircraft on a larger scale.
