Elbit Systems has announced it will develop and integrate cutting-edge laser weapon systems onto Israeli Air Force fighter jets and military helicopters. This strategic move aims to provide an airborne layer of defense against the increasing threat of missiles and drones in the region.
The defense contractor unveiled these plans during its 2025 financial results presentation, marking a significant shift in aerial combat technology. This airborne initiative builds upon the success of the Iron Beam, a ground-based laser defense system developed by Rafael that became operational in late 2025. By moving laser technology from the ground to the cockpit, the Israeli military seeks to bypass the atmospheric limitations and range constraints that can sometimes hinder land-based interceptions.
Technically, these high-energy lasers function by focusing a concentrated beam of light to neutralize targets at the speed of light, offering a virtually unlimited magazine. Integrating this into aircraft allows the military to engage threats at higher altitudes, significantly expanding the defensive perimeter and reducing the cost per interception compared to traditional kinetic missiles.
